Understanding Physics Like a Nerd Without Becoming One More PART I Mechanics In Color Kalayu Belay James Strohaber Books

I was already excited about this book when I first learned that the author was in the process of writing it. This book was well written and an excellent read for not only students but professionals. Leading the witness, the humble approach of the read is in line with the personality of the author. It also reminds me a saying from Albert Einstein and it goes "If you can't explain it to a six year old, you don't understand it yourself." The book was written in such a manner that readers from all walks of life are engaged as they read.

When I was in high school, I claimed to have the passion for physics and a student literally earns the highest "respect" for "knowing" the answer after a long calculation. Looking back, had this book was available back then, everyone would have been the rock star just like on any other subjects and hence could understand the practical aspect of the commonly used words - acceleration, velocity, gravity, projectile. Hope everyone takes advantage of this gift from a talented author.

Understanding Physics Like a Nerd Without Becoming One More PART I Mechanics In Color Kalayu Belay James Strohaber Books Reviews

This book offered a very easy read with its "conversational" approach to Physics. Not only are you explained the formulas, but due to the style of the book, you are given an understanding of how those formulas apply (or can be applied) in real-world situations. Because of this, I gained an appreciation (and interest) for the formulas and their concepts. The book did a great job of keeping my attention, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is looking to learn Physics differently than most textbooks are going to teach it.
I cannot think of a subject that has more relevance to every aspect of our life than physics. It is about explaining how the world around us works. However it is also one of the most intimidating subjects. With this book the authors reveal the wonders of physics in explaining basic concepts that seem to puzzle our commonsensical understanding of the world, they do this in simple conversational terms. The casual discussion between the teacher and the student is a genial approach that makes the reader think that they are eavesdropping on a conversation that keeps getting more and more interesting. The wonderful vignettes on wisdom and good habits are a perfect addition to the method. This book does not only make learning physics simple but also fun. Bravo to the authors!!
The presentation of this book is unique in its dialogue type approach between a professor and student which is like nothing I have ever read before. This simulates a rather familiar classroom and yet informal type setting which most students should find to be more readable and easy to follow. The authors make use of this style to ask and answer subtle questions which are sources of commons mistakes in students. The book also digresses to humor and words of wisdom every now and then, unlike other books which go straight down to business. Here, physics seems less intimidating and somehow more doable. Students can make use of this book as a companion to jumpstart their college course work. This is the missing book which should have been in the bookshelves a long time ago. Do yourself a favor and buy this book. I cannot recommend it high enough!!!
The concept of the book is a clever take on textbooks as well as the learning process, but the book is filled with typos and continuity errors that make it difficult to follow for physics novices (who are the primary target readers). At first, the errors are minor, but once you get deeper into the later chapters of the book you began to second guess your notes, and lose confidence in your data due to the continuity errors. With the worst part out of the way, the next flaw in the book is relatively minor. When "Cassie" and the "Professor" are working through examples, it would be much easier to follow, if all of the work for each example was kept concise and only filled up one page (or two if you can view both pages simultaneously). Aside from these flaws the book is great at showcasing the growth of Cassie into an ideal student. The book has life lessons as well as physics lessons which is something the average college student needs at this point in their life. I would give this book a 5 star rating, if it was re-released and more polished to contain no errors.
Overall, I really like the main approach of the book. It combines a simple narrative based approach to introductory physics concepts along with interwoven life lessons that can really be beneficial. The physics content is top notch though, with lessons explained in a simple and clear way. But it does feel as though the story telling and the physics content don't always blend together very smoothly. There are a few bits and pieces along the way that could use a bit more polishing on an editorial side as well. This refers to punctuation, wording, text organization, etc. Nonetheless this is a unique approach to teaching introductory physics that is not done by most other authors. This puts physics into a more approachable form, and as the title suggests you can learn physics without getting bogged down by the technicalities.
Excellent Book! I've had the great pleasure of knowing and working for Dr. Belay. Not only is Dr. Belay a great instructor and experimentalist, he is also a great person who is passionate about teaching his students and genuinely wants to see them succeed in their endeavors.

Now on to the review - this book deals with the type of "physics" one can literally see on a daily basis if one were to take the information in this book and keenly observe the natural world. The text provides the "meat" to be a substantial study aid and can be a bit verbose, but it won't lose the casual and/or non-technically inclined. There are enough illustrations to appease visual learners, but not so much to make you feel you're reading a "for dummies" text or a children's book...This is real physics folks! I feel this text could benefit both an undergraduate student taking College and/or General Physics w/Calculus.
